crest of a steep hill, a sim-
ple and graceful building
with unusual circular
brick columns, a wrought iron
gate and marble steps lead-
ing to the entrance.
Every year, thousands of
visitors find their way to this
entrance. They climb Syna-
gogue Hill, as it's popularly
called, so that they can visit
the second oldest synagogue
in the Western Hemisphere.
The Hebrew Congregation
of St Thomas — or, as it's of-
ficially named, the Congre-
gation of Blessing and Peace
and Loving Deeds — is also
considered to be the oldest

ble," says the rabbi. A native
of Broomall, Pa., he had his
first pulpit in Indianapolis.
From there he came to this is-
land, one of the U.S. Virgin
Islands, where the license
plates read, "the American
Paradise."
The rabbi works in his sec-
ond floor office above the his-
toric sanctuary, where a
window overlooks a view of
the scenic harbor. But he
doesn't have much time to en-
joy the view.
Not only does he have all
the responsibilities of a pul-
pit rabbi anywhere, but be-
cause he heads a historic

synagogue building in con-
tinuous use under the Amer-
ican flag.
No wonder that for many
travelers to St. Thomas, vis-
iting the historic synagogue
is a top priority.
As soon as cruise ships
dock, some passengers head
straight for the synagogue. So
do visitors who fly over for a
day from nearby San Juan
aboard the hourly American
Eagle shuttle flights. As for
those staying in St. Thomas,
they soon jump into a cab and
head for Synagogue Hill or
they gamely climb it on foot.
Two years ago, one visitor
who came trekking up the hill
happened to be a tourist from
the States who was 104 years
old. "He said, just had to see
this synagogue!' " recalls Rab-
bi Bradd Boxman, who is of-
ten on hand to greet visitors
and give tours of the sanctu-
ary.
"We get about 200 visitors
a day in high season, and
we're trying to give them as

tour guide and historian.
He might soon be some-
thing of a media celebrity,
too: The rabbi and his con-
gregation are busy planning
an event which will surely
draw media attention to this
small island congregation.
Although its year-round
resident members number
only 150 family member fam-
ilies, the historic congrega-
tion, which was established
in 1796, is gearing up for a
gala celebration to mark its
bicentennial year in 1996.
"We're laying the ground-
work for a tremendous year-
long celebration," says Rabbi
Boxman, who is spearhead-
ing the effort.
The celebration is sched-
uled for September 1995
through June 1996, and al-
ready the rabbi can reel of an
impressive agenda of events
and projects that will make
this a unique celebration: a
havdalah service on the
beach, an interfaith seder,
