UJA Plans
Family Mission

All children celebrating their
bar or bat mitzvah may travel
free when their families join the
United Jewish Appeal Nation-
al Winter Family Mission to Is-
rael Dec. 22-31.
Co-sponsored by the Jew-
ish Federation of Metropoli-
tan Detroit, the mission is
available to parents, children
and grandparents. It offers
special events, such as plant-
ing trees in Israel, visiting
Youth Aliyah villages and vo-
cational retraining programs,
and meeting kibbutzniks, sol-
diers and Israeli families. In-
cluded are special youth
programs designed to meet
the needs of children from
age 7 to adult.
The missions include
round-trip air fare from New
York, deluxe accommodations
(double occupancy), trans-
portation, guides, gratuities
and most meals. Bar and bat
mitzvah children of families
participating in the mission
travel free.

WA Leaders
Conference

All young adults in the com-
munity are invited to greet
Challenges to a New Genera-
tion, the United Jewish Ap-
peal's March 20-22 Ninth
Young Leadership Conference
in Washington, D.C. An infor-
mational meeting will be held
5:45 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Max M.
Fisher Building.
At the gathering, which
will include light hors d'oeu-
vres, Jewish Community
Council President Jeannie
Weiner will discuss the im-
portance of being heard and
how to access the United
States government process.
Delegates will hear from
U.S. and Israeli leaders and
will be briefed by Clinton Ad-
ministration and Congres-
sional officials. Participants
also will meet with their in-
dividual members of the U.S.
House and Senate. In addi-
tion, there will be a special
program at the U.S. Holo-
caust Memorial Museum, en-
tertainment and multi-media
events.
The Detroit delegation,
which is chaired by Robert
Orley and Kathy Wilson-
Fink, will include 100 mem-
bers, including newcomers
from the former Soviet Union.
