special Jewish tours of the is-

guests and varied cultural
events,
For instance, there are
plans for an exhibit of the
work of French Impression-
ist artist Camille Pissarro,
whose parents were members
of the congregation. "And
we're working with the Uni-
versity of the Virgin Islands
to several plays of Jewish in-
terest," says Rabbi Boxman.
There also will be a Jewish

Visiting the
synagogue is a top
priority for many
travelers to St.
Thomas.

Gardens, which is an outdoor
arts and culture center found-
ed by Rhoda Tillett, a mem-
ber of the congregation.
Another highlight will be a
service in the sanctuary that
will replicate a typical service
of 1796. "We'll have the same
music, the same liturgy; we'll
even wear the same clothing,"
says Rabbi Boxman. "We're
going to authenticate exactly
what a Sephardic service of
1796 was like."
There also are plans to
mark particular events in the
congregation's history. "In
this sanctuary, the first con-
firmation in the Western
Hemisphere took place in
1833," says the rabbi proud-
ly. The congregation verified
this historic first two years
ago and then set to work ver-
ifying it. Now they're trying
to track down the descen-

were confirmed here, and
they hope to have them par-
ticipate in a special ceremo-
ny honoring the event.
The bicentennial is in-
tended not only for congre-
gants and visitors but for the
residents of St. Thomas, both
Jewish and not Jewish. An
education committee is plan-
ning year-long programs in
the public schools about the
synagogue and about Jewish
history.
The celebration will be
launched with "Pilgrimage
200," when an El Al plane
lands on the island to trans-
port 200 St. Thomians —
Jews and non-Jews— to Is-
rael. "This is to help build ties
between the Virgin Islands
and Israel," says the rabbi,
"and also to emphasize 200
years of interaction between
the local community and the
synagogue."
The congregation also is ex-
