Tel Aviv (JTA) — While
speaking before the Knesset
last Week, Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres made a com-
ment that almost brought
the house down around him.
During a Knesset debate
on the escalating violence in
the Gaza Strip and West
Bank, Mr. Peres was an-
swering criticism from
members of the opposition,
some of whom were calling
on the government to call off
the peace talks until radical
Arabs ceased their attacks
on Israelis.
Mr. Peres responded by
saying that Israeli security
forces were doing all in their
power to halt the attacks.
He then added: "The most
that (Palestine Liberation
Organization Chairman)
Yassir Arafat can do at the
moment is to denounce the
attacks — until he forms a
Palestine state in Gaza and
Jericho."
His reference to a
"Palestine state" created a
furor in the Knesset.
Mr. Peres backtracked by
apologizing for what he de-
scribed as a "slip of the
tongue," stressing that what
he had meant to say was
"until he establishes the
Palestine police force in
Gaza and Jericho."
But opposition members,
claiming that Mr. Peres'
remark was a Freudian slip
that betrayed his real expec-
tations for the eventual es-
tablishment of a Palestinian
state, launched into a noisy
and angry interruption of
the Knesset debate.
Nomination
Is Approved
Washington (JTA) — Ed-
ward Djerejian has moved
one step closer toward the
post of U.S. ambassador to
Israel.
The Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee approved
the veteran diplomat's nom-
ination by voice vote last
week.
The full Senate is expected
to approve the nomination,
possibly within days.
Mr. Djerejian, a former
ambassador to Syria, is now
assistant secretary of state
for Near East affairs. He has
been one of the key ad-
ministration players on the
Middle East peace process.
The widely respected
Djerejian is expected to take
tip his position in Israel at
the start of 1994.
