University of Michigan Professor
David Schoem.

vacuum. The Jewish commu-
nity can't make it alone."
At the General Assembly of
the Council of Jewish
Federations in Montreal last
week, CJF Research Director
Barry Kosmin said there are
many reasons for Jews to live
together.
"Obviously, there is a thought
that if we want people to use
Jewish services, this is a very
practical thing," Mr. Kosmin
said. "If I am the only Jewish
kid in my school, then I would
find it very hard to operate. If
we do accept that we are differ-
ent, we accept there is some se-
curity in numbers.
"The only way we can make
services viable is to have a cer-
tain amount of Jews in a certain
area," he said. "There are cer-
tain levels of human behavior
that you have to have to do face-
to-face — like a minyan. I don't
know if you can do that on a TV
hook up. That is an interesting
question."
U-M's Dr. Schoem offers a dif-
ferent approach.
Perhaps, Dr. Schoem said,
community leaders must work
harder to redefine their core.
"I am not sure these lead-
ers need to reach out," Dr.
Schoem said. `These people, the
floaters, are comfortable with
their balance. If they are com-
fortable with it, perhaps we (the
organized community) need to
join them." ❑
