Father's Footsteps

Benyamin Kahane spreads the message of his
assassinated elder.

RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER

H

e'd rather not talk
about the day his
father was shot.
Benyamin Ka-
hane, the 27-year-old son
of the late Rabbi Meir
Kahane, wants to look
ahead with a controversial
vision: Expel
all Arabs
from Israel.
It is the
same vision

labeled
racist
and
supremacist
— that led to
his father's
assassination
in New York
three years
ago.
Since
then, Ben-
yamin has
formed Ka-

hane Chai,
Kahane
Lives, an in- Benyamin Kahane
ternational
political party that aims
to keep the words of his
father alive.
Barred from running for
Knesset, the younger
Kahane is drumming up
support through speaking
tours of the United States
and Israel. He visited
Detroit last week at the
behest of the Jewish Idea,
a local group promoting
Meir Kahane's beliefs.
"My father is not
around so someone must
continue. We have to be
stronger now. We don't
have a big leader to do it
for us," the younger
Kahane said.
In Israel, Mr. Kahane
has been arrested for van-
dalizing a mosque in the
West Bank. He also has
staged protests over the
recent peace accord and
believes the time for revo-
lution is drawing near.
Jews should rebel against
the the current leader-
ship, which is endanger-
ing Israel's existence, he
said.
"Now Israel is standing
at the most critical cross-
roads of its existence. Now
it's time to ask, as my
father always did, is
Israel another Western
country, or is it a Jewish
state?" he said. "The real
problem is that Israel is a
state of Jews, not a

Jewish state. We have
Jews giving the land away
at the same time Arabs
are killing us. (Current
leadership) doesn't under-
stand that Arabs are try-
ing to wipe us out."
Mr. Kahane believes
that Israeli
Foreign
Minister
Shimon
Peres, in
calling for a
new Middle
East, is real-
ly advocating
a dissolution
of land, reli-
gious and
ethnic bound-
aries.
"He's say-
ing to him-
self, 'Who
needs these
differences
between peo-
ple? Who
needs a Jewish state and
who needs Jews?' "
Mr. Kahane believes
Israel should annex the
territories to Israel and
expel Arabs who do not
want to recognize that
Israel belongs to the
Jewish people. Under his
plan, Arabs could live in
Israel, but they would not
be able to vote or run for
Knesset.
He denies charges of
racism.
"I am a Jew who
believes in God and His
Torah, which says that
the Jews are the chosen
people. If that's called
racism, call it that," he
said.
Farmington Hills resi-
dent Michael Drissman is
a Jewish Idea leader and
defends Mr. Kahane
against charges of racism.
He says Jewish pride and
unity are essential to
Jewish survival.
"We are radical if radi-
cal means that, when it
comes to Israel, it remains
a Jewish state," he said.
"There's nothing wrong
with being radical, with
believing that Jews
should marry Jews and
you should have a Jewish
state founded on Jewish
law. Arabs should live in
their own 21 countries."
