Washington (JTA) — For the
past month, it has been
almost impossible to walk
through downtown Wash-
ington without seeing hate
graffiti, including swastikas
and Nazi SS insignias cover-
ing telephone booths, news-
paper vending machines and
many other flat surfaces
visible to the public eye.
Last week, the Anti-
Defamation League organiz-
ed a community cleanup
effort that attracted about
50 ADL members and con-
cerned citizens.
Laura Kam, ADL's direc-
tor of special projects, said
that according to the District
of Columbia police, the rash
of swastikas and SS in-
signias is the worst outbreak
of bias-related graffiti in
memory.
Since the graffiti first
started appearing last mon-
th, ADL has received more
than 100 calls from concern-
ed citizens, both Jews and
non-Jews.
"It's the nation's capital,"
Ms. Kam said. "I got letters
from people all over" the
United States who had
"visited Washington and
couldn't take it."
The police now have one
suspect in custody, but the
graffiti has continued ap-
pearing since the arrest.
On Oct. 22, the ADL vol-
unteers met downtown at
lunchtime, took their sol-

vent cleaner and got to work.
"There's no way ADL is
going to clean up the whole
city, but it was a start," Ms.
Kam said.
She said that ADL has
been pushing the District of
Columbia government to
clean up the graffiti and said
the district's department of
public works has begun
removing some of it.
