the Israeli- Palestinian
declaration of principles.
"Usually our policy is not
to isolate any country," said
Mr. Sato.
"We are trying to persuade
the Iranians to take more
moderate measures," in-
cluding curbing its opposi-
tion to the peace process and
exerting its influence on re-
jectionist groups like Hez-
bollah in Lebanon, he said.
Jewish leaders here have
said such activity is useful

are hoping for further
changes in Japanese behav-

Jewish Committee, which
was founded in 1988 in re-
sponse to the upsurge of an-
ti-Semitic literature in
Japan.
"But there are still some
residues of caution and even
fear on the part of some
Japanese companies," Mr.
Sandberg said.
In addition, it would be an
important sign if Japan were
to open a trade office in
Israel, as it has done in
Egypt and the Persian Gulf,
Jewish leaders said.
Such a move would "send a
very important message to
Israelis and Jewish busi-
nessmen that it's OK to
engage in trade with Israel,"
Mr. Mariaschin said.
Japan is still holding back
on opening an office because
of "budgetary problems,"
said Mr. Sato, laughing as
he explained that even
Japan has problems with its
budget.
But he said such an office
was a future possibility, con-
