cluding tourists and many
groups of young people. "It is
intended as a learning center
for young people," said Ms.
Genger, who has hosted
young people from France,
the Netherlands, England
and Israel. Each month,
about 200 German students
come to see the exhibits.
A historian and teacher,
Ms. Genger, who is not Jew-
ish, was appointed director of
the center four months after
it opened. Before that, she
had worked in the nearby
town of Essen, helping to es-
tablish the first city memor-
ial of this type in Germany.
"I was very interested in
learning how to create a
memorial place," said Ms.
Genger, who recently served
as a consultant to the plan-
ners of the U.S. Holocaust
Museum.

Officials from that muse-
um have visited the Dussel-
dorf Memorial Center as the
Israelis from Yad Vashem.
So have a number of Dus-
seldorf Jews who survived
the Holocaust. They are spe-
cial guests when they visit,
and they feel especially grate-
ful for its existence.
"Those who lived here as
Jews really appreciate that
we are working with young
people to educate them about
the past," said Ms. Genger,
"and that this is a place
where we memorialize what
happened."❑

Washington (JTA) — A bill
that would enhance re-
ligious freedom in America
has cleared its final hurdle
before being signed into law
by President Clinton.
The House of Represent-
atives approved the Senate
version of the Religious
Freedom Restoration Act by
unanimous consent.
The bill, which is sup-
ported by a broad coalition of
Jewish and other religious
groups, would make it
harder for the government to
encroach on free exercise of
religion.
After a tough lobbying
battle, the Senate passed the
bill last week. Earlier this
year, the House had passed
its own version, which
differed only slightly.
The president, who sup-
ports the legislation, is ex-
petted to sign it soon. LI
