spelling checked and other
details verified (birth date
and name of death camp for
each victim), the list was giv-
en to students in the Albert
Durer School, a local art
school.
"Each student was given
one page to do," explained
Ms. Genger. The students
took this as a great honor and
worked diligently and care-
fully: At the bottom of the

name of the Jews he or she
inscribed.
The students made three
original books. One is now in
Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
Another is in the Jewish
Community Center of Dus-
seldorf, which adjoins the
city's distinctive white stone
synagogue. The third memo-
rial book has a place of hon-
or in the Dusseldorf
Memorial Center.
The names are honored in
the Memorial Center in an-
other way, too. On three walls
of the room, extending from
the midpoint all the way to
the top of each wall, each
name is nearly printed — all
2,213 of them.
Nearby, 25 additional
names are written on a sepa-
rate white banner also on dis-
play. "After we finished the
printing the walls, we found
more names of victims," said
Ms. Genger. She pauses and
adds, "And I think we will
find still more."
If and when they are found,
those names, too, will be
memorialized here.
The other varied exhibits
include the yellow "Jude"
badges which the Jews were
forced to wear; close-up pho-
tos of nine of the Jewish vic-
tims of Dusseldorf — a
fraction of the total, but a
way to humanize the loss; a
photo of the striking and or-
nate synagogue which was
destroyed with so many oth-
ers in 1938.
There's also a separate ex-
hibit devoted to the pre-war
rabbis of Dusseldorf, includ-
ing Leo Baeck, who lived in
the city from 1907 to 1912,
and Dr. Max Eschelbacher,
who served as a rabbi for 25
years.

Memorial Center draws a
