school and yeshiva in the
country is, on its part, gasp-
ing for funding. It boggles the
mind to think what wonder-
ful things could be done with
monies brought in by the pro-
posed voucher system!
Along comes Gov. Engler,
sympathetic to a plan which
would give some relief to our
cash-strapped private schools
and afford Jewish parents a
greater opportunity to send
their children to Jewish day
schools, and these ill-con-
ceived organizations band to-
gether to protest the
measure! Don't they realize
what a boon such a plan
would be to our Jewish edu-
cational institutions, what a
positive difference such a
plan could make to the future
of our Jewish community?
I would think (wish!) that
all Jewish organizations
would encourage and pro-
mote Jewish education. If
these organizations truly care
about Jewish continuity (and
if they don't, what is their ul-
timate purpose?), their mem-
bers should put their
considerable energies and
means toward furthering this
end, rather than opposing it.

Costs Increase
In Israel
Tel Aviv (JTA) — October
saw a cost-of-living increase
here that considerably ex-
ceeded expectations and is
contributing to a spiraling
annual inflation rate.
The 1.4 percent rise in the
cost-of-living index, an-
nounced by the Central Bu-
reau of Statistics, was at-
tributed to a 2.9 percent
elevation in housing costs as
well as a 6.29 percent sea-
sonal rise in the price of
clothing.
As a result of the October
increase, Israel's 1993 infla-
tion rate will be at least 11.4
percent.
