pointing day for the indigent,"
the colonel said.
At the same time, it provid-
ed an opportunity for many
Jews to perform mitzvot.
"We responded to the ideal of
brotherhood, cherished by
both Christianity and Ju-
daism," said Rabbi Irwin
Groner of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. "For us, it was
a very unusual and distinct op-
portunity for service to the non-
Jewish community."
Last year, more than 1,500
meals were prepared by mem-
bers of local Jewish congrega-
tions. Nearly 1,000 were
hand-delivered to people living
near Eight Mile Road — in a
section of Detroit that was once
a very Jewish part of town.
Lt. Colonel Harvey, a native
Detroiter, says he is driven by
hopes for interfaith unity.
"Partnership is the key to
God's blessing," he said at an
honorary luncheon sponsored
by Shaarey Zedek's Men's Club.
Rabbis Groner and William
Gershon, along with other
leaders of the congregation,
attended the luncheon Mon-
day to present Lt. Colonel
Harvey with a plaque thanking
him for promoting ecumenical-
ism.
"We wanted to recognize the
significant contribution he
made to the Men's Club of our
congregation, to interfaith un-
derstanding and support," Rab-
bi Groner said.

Lt. Colonel Clarence Harvey

In the past, the Salvation
Army has been perceived as a
proselytizing organization. Lt.
Colonel Harvey's programs, in
part, have been aimed at dis-
pelling that stereotype.
Though Lt. Colonel Harvey
soon will relocate to a different
division in Chicago, he hopes
the Salvation Army's ecumeni-
cal undertakings will contin-
ue in Detroit.
"If there's one thing I'd like
to envision, it would be that De-
troit serves as a model. Part-
nership can work. It needs to
work. Detroit can be looked at
as a model for the world if we
do it right," he said.
This year, Shaarey Zedek
and the Salvation Army are
asking volunteers to help
prepare and deliver meals be-
fore the Shabbat which coin-
cides with Christmas. People
interested in participating on
Dec. 22 and 23 should call
the congregation at 357-5544,
or the Salvation Army at
443-5500. ❑
