faith.
Many people argue the mer-
its of interfaith dating. They
say that love, not religion,
should influence the choice of
whom to ask out.
"If you are in love, religion
should not matter," said Erinn,
a Jewish student at Southfield-
Lathrup.
One member of B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization (BBYO)
said:
"I don't really understand
what the big deal is about this
whole issue. I feel that people
should date whomever they
want and be blind to faith. This
is a big part of the reason our
world is so prejudiced."
These ideas clash with the
feelings of many Jewish high
school students who grew up
two generations ago. In those
days, more Jewish teen-agers
opposed interfaith dating.
Even today, however, there
are many teen-agers who
strongly oppose dates between
Jews and gentiles.
"If a Catholic wants to date
a Muslim, that's fine with me,"
said a student from Southfield-
Lathrup. "But I think Jews
should only date within the
faith or eventually there will be
a very small population of Jews
left."
What will the attitude of the
next generation be? Only Jews,
themselves, will decide.
