LESLEY PEARL STAFF WRITER
he problems for Jews in
the former Soviet Union
are far from over.
New York filmmaker
Ray Errol Fox wants to make
sure that point is clear and
well-taken. So he created Free-
dom to Hate, a one-hour movie
chronicling anti-Semitism in
contemporary Russia.
Filmed in 1991, Freedom to
Hate contains interviews with
Russian Jews, gentiles, gov-
ernment leaders and members
of hate groups like Pamyat.
Pamyat members have blamed
Jews for AIDS, pornography
and the Russian Revolution.
"I had been nominated for
an Academy Award for a film
about Yad Vashem. I knew if
I got the chance to make an
acceptance speech, I wouldn't
waste the time on gratuitous
thank-yous. I would talk about
Russia, anti-Semitism, the
pogroms, our responsibility in
the media," Mr. Fox said. "I
never got the chance to make
the speech. But three weeks
later I was over in the Soviet
Union with seed money to
make a film while the world
was watching."
Rae Sharfman, a member of
the Soviet Jewish Prisoners In-
formation Center, has helped
coordinate a showing of the film
in Detroit Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at
the Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center. Mr. Fox will in-
troduce the film and answer
questions.
Co-sponsors of the free event
include the Jewish Communi-
ty Council, Hadassah, the Anti-
Defamation League and eight
other local organizations.
The film has been nominat-
ed for an Academy Award and
was selected an Outstanding
Documentary of the Year by
the Motion Picture Foundation.
`This is a community project.
This is community informa-
tion," Ms. Sharfman said. "It's
important. People think the
problems are over in the former
Soviet Union. They are not."
"People are always so
shocked when they see the film.
Americans just don't seem to
grasp what is going on in the
former Soviet Union. When I
ask for help, people respond
with, 'What's the problem?
Aren't they free to leave? Isn't
it a democracy now?' My an-
swer is 'not exactly,' " Mr. Fox
said. On Nov. 24, Mr. Fox will
discuss his work in regards to
Operation Exodus, the Jewish
Federation/United Jewish Ap-
peal campaign to rescue and re-
settle Jews of the former Soviet
Union, on NBC-TV's Today
Show. ❑
