house, moted that the Fisher

best-seller for the holidays.

Cellular Phones

In cellular phones, the trend
is toward handheld phones.
And the quality and reliability
are now better than ever.
But hold on. Before shopping
for a cellular phone, ask your-
self some questions. After all,
there are three styles to choose
from: installed, transportable
(also known as "bag phones")
and handhelds.
Which is the best for you?
If you're only going to use a
cellular phone in your car, get
an installed phone. The bag
phone is for people who have

more than one car, while the
handheld is for use both inside
and outside the car.
Here's another consideration:
power.
Transportable and installed
phones have three watts of pow-
er, but handhelds are limited to
.6 watts of power. "With the
lower-power units, there's more
static and you'll drop calls more
often.
One more thing to keep in
mind. Installed phones usually
include a hands-free micro-
phone. It's like a speakerphone.
What are some popular mod-
els of installed and trans-
portable cellular phones? For a
basic model, check out the Mo-
torola TVS2000 (transportable)
or the TVM200 (installed). Both

offer a single-strength display,
a 30-number memory, and a
lockout feature that requires
punching in a personal code to
activate the phone.
And the cost? Surprisingly
low — if you sign up with the
telephone carrier when you buy.
For more features in a trans-
portable or installed phone, con-
sider the Motorola 2001. It
boasts a speed-dial feature, a
three-year warranty and auto-
matic answer (for hands-free
operation while driving).
Handheld cellular phones of-
fer a wide range of features. Mr.
Gorman suggested the Mit-
subishi 3500 weighing one
pound, seven ounces. The Mo-
torola Ultralight offers a silent
mode that vibrates instead of
rings, and has a security-code
feature that calls you if the
phone is stolen and the thief at-
tempts to use it without first en-
tering the code.
The Fujitsu PCX is more
than a cellular phone. It's for
the businessman or woman
who requires both a phone and
a pager — and it's small enough
to fit in a shirt pocket. A deluxe
version features a two-year war-
ranty and a leather case.
Another recommended hand-
held cellular phone is the Nokia
T1000. It features alphanu-
meric memory, call timers,
signal strength meters, muting,
ringer volume, a backlit
key pad, and a telescoping an-
tenna. ❑
