Ya'acov Shapira Jerusalem (JTA) — Ya'acov Shapira, 90, who was Israel's first attorney general and served as minister ofjustice un- der former Prime Minister Golda Meir, died this week in Tel Aviv. A prominent member of the Mapai Party, the forerunner of the present-day Labor Party, Mr. Shapira was named attor- ney general at the state's found- ing in 1948 and remained in that position until 1950. He was later elected to the Knesset on the Mapai ticket. Mr. Shapira came to Israel from Russia in the 1920s, set- tling first on a kibbutz for sev- eral years. He then studied law and went into private practice be- fore becoming the state's chief attorney. Mr. Shapira crossed swords with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion during the Lavon Affair, which began in 1954 when an Israeli spy ring was captured in Egypt. The spies were suspected of having planted bombs in Cairo and Alexandria in what was purportedly an effort to sabo- tage relations between Egypt and the West. In that controversy, which caused then Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon to resign, Mr. Shapira lined up firmly behind Ben-Gurion's rivals, Levi Eshkol and Golda Meir. In 1966, Mr. Shapira was named minister of justice by then Prime Minister Eshkol. Aian 11.D orfman Funeral Direction build a strong foundation with good prenatal care.
