Quilt examines the lives wo-
ven together in one 32-panel
block. Its characters span the
ages of 12 t,o 70.
Historical fiction, Quilt melds
many lives represented into sin-
gular characters while also fo-
cusing on well-knowns like
Liberate.
"But it's not so much about
the people who died, as those
who survived and created the
Quilt. It's their story, too," Ms.
Samson said. "What is learned
from this piece of education is
that everyone is human, some-
one's mother or father or lover.
And that everyone is someone's
child."

and founding member of

.Ms. Samson, along with
AIDS volunteers and travel
mates Ken Owen, Michael
Phillips and Barbara Silber-
berg, banded together to form
OPSS Productions.

Seven AIDS
organizations will
benefit from the
Detroit production.

Their first production is a lo-
cal revue of Quilt, written by
Jim Morgan, Merle Hubbard
and John Schak. Mr. Phillips
will direct the Detroit perfor-
mances.
The story follows the history
of the Quilt, from its humble be-
ginnings in 1987 by San Fran-
cisco volunteers hoping to create
a living memorial, to its 1992

OPSS is not the first to recre-
ate the story of Quilt. Groups in
California, Texas, Florida, Con-
necticut and others in Michigan
are performing the work also.
In Detroit, all proceeds will
benefit the AIDS Community
Alliance (ACA), a coalition of
seven AIDS service organiza-
tions, including Friends Al-
liance, AIDS Interfaith
Network and the Midwest
AIDS Prevention Project.
Funds will remain local and be
used for client services.
Any AIDS association can
join ACA.
"We're trying to help AIDS
organizations work together, to
form a coalition," Ms. Samson
said. "There is so much need
and so few places to go."

Quilt —A Musical Celebra-
tion will be performed at the
Smith Theatre of Oakland
Community College in Farm-
ington Hills Dec. 3, 4, 10 and 11
at 8 p.m. and Dec. 5 and 12 at
2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and
available through Ticket Mas-
ter outlets. 0
