spot. 'We're not afraid of hav-
ing three or four white males
rurming against her (in the pri-
mary)," Ms. Gottlieb said. "She
is better than all of them put to-
gether. They are a lot of the
same."
Though she is the only Jew-
ish Senate candidate in either
party, Ms. Pollack's position on
Israel is not much different
from the other Democrats con-
sidering the race. In fact, Mr.
Carr, a veteran member of Con-
gress, has consistently been la-
beled by pro-Israel lobbyists as
a good friend.
Mr. Blanchard always has
been a supporter of the Jewish
community, and Mr. Brod-
head's congressional record was
good on Israel. Mr. Ferguson
has not yet revealed his posi-
tion.
GOP hopefuls include former
state committeewoman Ronna
Romney, who quit her job this
week to enter the race, former
U.S. Rep. Carl Pursell and for-
mer state GOP chair Spencer
Abraham.
Most pundits admit it is too
early to predict the outcome of
this race. But they also suggest
that no one should underesti-
mate Ms. Pollack's ability to
build a political support system.
This month, Dr. Bill and
Florine Mark Ross are hosting
a fund-raiser for Ms. Pollack at
their home. The committee list
reads like a who's who in the
Jewish community.
Among those on the Pollack
bandwagon are Lois Grenader,
Barbara Goldman Kratchman,
Linda Soberman, Arlene Vic-
tor, Barbara Tukel, Cheryl Sug-
arman, Arnold Winshall, Linda
Klein, Dr. Conrad Giles, Nor-
man LoPatin and Marvin No-
vack.
The campaign has raised
close to $280,000 toward an es-
timated $2 million campaign
budget. Now that Sen. Riegle is
out of the race, Ms. Gottlieb, the
treasurer, predicts fund raising
will be easier.
"Michigan voters will de-
mand change," Ms. Pollack
said. " They are frustrated by
the scandal and gridlock in
Washington. In Lansing, I've
earned a reputation as an ef-
fective, staunch independent
who puts common sense ahead
of partisan politics.
"My integrity is not for sale,"
she said. "Working families in
Michigan know I will effect
change, not defend the status
quo."
With Sen. Riegle out, the
state's Republican leaders are
anticipating a tough race.
"It will be even tougher if
Blanchard gets in," said Oak-
land County GOP Chairman
Jim Alexander. "But is still is
an extremely winnable race for
the GOP." O
