TWELVE OAKS -96 Pollard Support In Washington Washington (JTA) — Hun- dreds of supporters of Jonathan Pollard descended on Washington this week to urge the Clinton ad- ministration to commute Mr. Pollard's life sentence for spying for Israel. In an event dubbed Inter- national Jonathan Pollard Lobby Day, about 500 Pollard supporters held meetings Tuesday with members of Congress and the Israeli ambassador, Itamar Rabinovich, in a high-profile effort to free the former civilian Navy intel- ligence analyst. At an emotionally charged press conference on Capitol Hill lobby organizers termed the event a success. Speakers, including several members of Con- gress, encouraged the assembled Americans and Canadians to keep pushing for Mr. Pollard's release. Since Mr. Pollard's convic- tion for espionage in 1986, the American Jewish com- munity has been sharply split over his controversial case. While some in the Jewish community have refrained from taking a position on the Pollard issue or have not supported him, large numbers of local and nation- al groups have been vocally backing him. Mr. Pollard's sister, Carol, said that 220 Jewish groups are on record supporting a commutation of Mr. Pollard's sentence. His supporters charged that Mr. Pollard's sentence is excessive, and have filed a petition asking the ad- ministration to review the case and grant Mr. Pollard clemency. The Justice Department is expected to forward the peti- tion to the White House. O 6 5 O Sesame Street is coming to Twelve Oaks.
