manager of the Asheville
Symphony Orchestra and lat-
er director of the area's Jew-
ish federation.
While living in the South,
she was able to perform in
concerts, stage productions
and radio and TV commer-
cials. For the High Holidays,
she did liturgical singing at
the local synagogue.
"I would not call myself a
cantor by any stretch, but be-
cause Asheville had a small
Jewish community and a
small synagogue, it was a lot
looser so I could get up and
sing," she said.
One of her most exciting
stage experiences occurred in
Asheville, where she was part
of a singing trio that opened
for a Robert Klein concert.
This was nostalgic, too, be-
cause the group did a takeoff
on the Andrew Sisters.
She and her husband de-
cided to move back to the
metro area two years ago so
that their children could be
raised close to family.
Since returning, she has
appeared in dinner theater
productions at the Whitney
in Detroit and Genitti's in
Northville. She has present-
ed her Jewish music program
at the Jewish Community
Center, Jewish Federation
Apartments and at organiza-
tional meetings.
"I put together a program
that can be tailored for what-
ever people need," she said of
her show that features a pi-
anist as well. "In a half-hour
or hour, I sing songs with
Jewish content, or by Jewish
composers or with Yiddish
lyrics."
