are you living here? Why did
your parents come back?' In
Germany, you're always asked,"
she reports.
"But I'm very happy here. I
really enjoy my work. As long
as people are coming here and
buying Jewish books, I feel I'm
doing something important for
Judaism.

about a fellow Jew
living in Germany.

in the hotel industry, she could
easily relocate elsewhere. She
did live in Israel for nine
months — "a very good experi-
ence," she says.
She settled now in Dussel-
dorf. This cosmopolitan north-
ern Rhine city is her birthplace.
It's where her family and her
friends live. "So I always come
back here," says the 35-year old
sales executive for the Dussel-
dorf Hilton hotel.
She's the daughter of Ger-
man-born parents who survived
the Holocaust. Her father, born
in Leipzig, was in several con-
centration camps; her mother,
born in Breslow, escaped to
Brussels during the war.
"But after the war, they came
back to find out who had sur-
vived, and then they got jobs
and settled in Dusseldorf," she
relates.
Growing up Jewish in Dus-
seldorf, Ms. Israel attended
Jewish summer camps and
Jewish kindergarten, observed
the holidays and regularly at-
tended services with her fami-
ly in Dusseldorfs distinctive
dome-shaped synagogue. "I'm
traditional in my heart, and it's
always important for me to be
in the synagogue," she says.
She has Jewish friends
throughout Germany, but most
of her friends in Dusseldorf are
not Jewish. "But they are very
interested in Jewish history and
in the state of Israel," she says.
"They know I'm Jewish —
everybody knows it right away
because of my name — and
they accept it easily. Germans
on the whole are very open-
minded about Judaism."
