BERNHARDT

copies circulate from family
to family.
"The first program wasn't
what it is now," Ms. Pashke-
vich says. "We didn't have the
possibility of going out in the
field. It was all talking heads.
Interviews."
Now RTVD reporters,
working on their 19th show,
pound pavement to cover
Michigan Miracle Mission
events, holiday celebrations
and programs like the
Sephardic educational activ-
ity held last spring at the
Jewish Community Center in
Oak Park.
Programs air for the first
three weeks of every month

Programs air for the
first three weeks of
every month on
Saturdays at 10:05
p.m. and Mondays
and 6:05 p.m.

on Saturdays at 10:05 p.m.
and Mondays at 6:05 p.m. In
most cities, the show is on
Cannel 18, except in West
Bloomfield, where it is on
Channel
Recently, RTVD introduced
"Sweet Tables" to air at the
same times during the fourth
week of each month. "Sweet
Tables" is an hour of concerts
and cultural programming.
As rewarding as their work
is, say Mr. Valk and Ms.
Pashkevich, it is not without
frustrations. RTVD functions
without a budget. Though use
of public access facilities costs
nothing, the volunteers say
they need money for more
tapes and an eye-catching
graphic logo, which they
would like to feature at the
beginning of every show.
"We're looking for some-
thing a lot bigger," Mr. Valk
said. "If we get financing, and
staff and people working
there full-time, then we can
produce children's shows, not
just for Russians. It's the
community as a whole we're
concerned about."
Bob Whitney, access ser-
vices supervisor at Conti-
nental Cablevision, speaks
highly of the emigres' dedi-
cation and skills.
"(RTVD) is unquestionably
the most ambitious produc-
tion being undertaken in this
facility," he said. "Nobody else
is undertaking a magazine
program with as many ele-
ments and such high produc-
tion values. It's very
impressive." ❑
