Wherever they have settled, Jews have been useful to the nation's leaders. "Ambitious rulers have found in the Jews a source of talent not tied to the status quo, and given them pro- tection and opportunity in ex- change for their services as administrators, financiers and diplomats." Yet this "embrace," Mr. Gins- berg argues, has been fatal. Re- peatedly, the Jewish influence has proved to be only tempo- rary. But is this true of the United States, he asks. Does America's liberal tradition preclude the possibility of mobilized anti- Jewish hostility? How have op- posing political forces here used anti-Semitism, and how might they use it in the future? Mr. Ginsberg also is the au- thor of The Captive Public and Politics by Other Means. Primo Levi was, according to the New Re- public, "the great memo- rist of the Holocaust... and one of the outstandingly beautiful and moving writers of our time." He also was a man of great tragedy — a survivor who killed himself by jumping out the win- dow. Now, two of Mr. Levi's most memorable books, Survival in Auschwitz and The Reawaken- ing are out in paperback, from Collier Books. Survival in Auschwitz re- counts Mr. Levi's 10 months in the Nazi death camp. The new edition includes a never-before- published conversation between Mr. Levi and author Philip Roth. Survival's sequel, The Reawakening, tells of Mr. Levi's liberation from Auschwitz in 1945 and his strange journey home through the Soviet Union, Hungary and Rumania. - "Mommy," the little boy ask- ed. "Are they going to shoot us?" He never heard the an- swer, "because so many people were crying." So begins one story in Jane Marks' The Hidden Children: The Secret Survivors of the Holocaust (Fawcett Columbine), which contains 23 accounts of Jewish children hidden during World War II. They discuss their ordeal of hiding, their res- cuers and the guilt created by the necessity of adopting new and conflicting identities. Ms. Marks began her re- search on the hidden children in 1991, when New York mag- azine hired her to cover the First Gathering of the Hidden Children, which more than 1,600 persons attended. "For the hidden children, that weekend was a cathartic expe- rience," Ms. Marks states. "For the rest of the world it was an education." Ms. Marks is the author of a monthly family therapy col- umn in Parents magazine. One of the midwest's largest selections of bar and counter stools ❑ all aggressively priced.
