Alfred Gottschalk, president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, will be the scholar in residence for the 12th annual Richard C. Hertz Institute on Reform Ju- daism, Nov. 12-13 at Temple Beth El. He will ad- dress the issue of "Reform Judaism — Our Past, Present and Future." On Nov. 12 at 8 p.m., Dr. Gottschalk will speak on "With Ahad Ha-Am at the Crossroads of Zion- ism." On Nov. 13, he will lead a 9:30 Torah convo- cation on the subject of "Training Rabbis for Tomorrow." Dr. Gottschalk will conclude his visit with an address to the congregation at 11 a.m. Shabbat services On the subject of "Reform Judaism at the Crossroads — Where Are We Going?" Dr. Gottschalk earned a bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College and was ordained and graduated with honors from HUC-JIR. Dr. Gottschalk joined the faculty and administration of the college-insti- tute. He earned his Ph. D. from the University of Southern California and became professor ofJew- ish religious thought at the college in 1965. Dr. Gottschalk became president of HUC-JIR in 1971. Dr. Gottschalk has instituted study pro- grams in Jerusalem for all first year rabbinic, so- cial work and cantorial students and ordained both the first women rabbi and the first Israeli Reform rabbi.
