usan Nestor went to the
polls to cast her vote in
the Farmington Hills
City Council election be-
cause she felt it was her civic
responsibility.
But she was among the mi-
nority because most Oakland
County residents did not make
it to the polls on Nov. 2.
It is not unusual for voter
turnout to be low for city
council elections, but cities like
Oak Park saw less than nine
percent of their registered vot-
ers at the polls. The last Oak
Park election in 1991 had al-
T11--4- a 25 percent electorate
response.
"I would have tex t , oiilty if I
did not vote and then the cot,
cil did something I did not
agree with," said Ms. Nestor,
a Farmington Hills resident
for eight years.
Ms. Nestor, who said she
cast one vote for her friend, in-
cumbent Lawrence Litchman,
saw only two other voters at
7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
In Farmington Hills, Mr.

Aldo V a„, -, zzi and Jon Grant
were reelectee_ -Rut perhaps
the biggest upset I-41, e city
elections was the defeat of :r__ ,
Marks, a nine-year council in-
cumbent.
Southfield turnout was 25
percent, a five percent de-

S

Peter Cristiano were reelect-
ed. City Clerk Mary Bonner
and Mayor Donald Fracassi
also won.
Edward Allen, a Southfield
resident for 27 years, said he
voted for most of the incum-
bents but was especially in-
terested in the race for city
clerk.
He spent Tuesday at city
hall, preparing and sorting
ballots for counting.
Mr. Robinson said the scene
at city hall Tuesday night
was crowded as the precinct
totals were tabulated and post-
ed.
"I was a little more uptight
on Tuesday night than I have
been in past elections because
we worked a lot harder for this
election, - Mr. Robinson said.
"By the time the tir6t, few to-
tals came in, I felt a little more
relaxed."
Ms. Goldstein, the top vote-
getter in the council race,
spent Tuesday night wait-
ing for results at city hall
and celebrating with support-
ers.
Gerald Naftaly will spend
at least two more years as Oak
Park mayor. He ran unop-
posed. Incumbent Councilmen
^ liur Frohlich and Louis De-
in
also reelected.

Voting was leisurely in Southfield.

crease from the 1991 election.
With only a few hours re-
maining Tuesday night, some
of the Southfield precincts had
tallied less than 100 votes.
Southfield residents re-
elected all but one incumbent.
Myron Frasier, who was ap-
pointed to serve out the bal-
ance of Denise Alexander's
term, lost his bid to Joan Sey-
mour for a special two-year

term.

Suzanne Goldstein, Eli
Robinson, Steve Hurite and

dolph Judd and Eleanor
Siewert were reelected. Archie
Damman III was also victori-
ous.
Birmingham was the only
city to see an increase in
voter participation. City offi-
cials speculate the large num-
ber of candidates running
brought more voters to the
polls.
Gilda Jacobs and Gordon
Hassig ran unopposed for two
of four Huntington Woods
commissioner seats. ❑
