"The living will, by itself, is
not the way to go because the
decisions require personal
judgment," Ms. Czlonka said.

Halachah (Jewish law) has
very clear guidelines for what
the general rules are," he said.
"It's up to us to apply those
rules, case by case." ❑

Former Detroiter David Sabaroff.
W
hen portions of
southern California
became engulfed in
flames last week,
West Bloomfield residents
Pauline and Arnold Sabaroff
were not worried about their
son until they turned on CNN
and saw his neighborhood was
also in danger.
When they called David and
his wife, Bridget Hoff, at their
Laguna Beach home 50 miles
south of Los Angeles, the cou-
ple and nearly 25,000 other
Laguna Beach residents had
just received word to evacuate.
"Bridget answered the
phone and told my husband,
`We are on fire,' and then she
hung up," Ms. Sabaroff said.
It was not until later that
evening that the Sabaroffs
learned their son, who has no
insurance, lost everything in
the blaze.
"When I first spoke to
David, he told me they did not
think they were in danger,"
she said. "But later in the day
R.L. Grant & Associates
they had to evacuate and they
left with the clothes on their
backs."
Mr. Sabaroff and his wife,
both artists, managed to save
slides and portfolios of their
work and Ms. Hoff grabbed
her wedding dress. However,
the couple was unable to find
their cat as they dashed out of
their home.
When they returned to their
home two days later, they
found it destroyed.
"They lost their art and all
their equipment," Ms. Sabaroff
said. "They are very concerned
about how they are going to
start up again. Now their
whole life's worth of work is
gone. Both my son and his wife
were just about to crawl out of
debt with some of the large or-
ders they were working on but
now that's all gone."

Pauline Sabaroff
Ms. Sabaroff said she and
her family were surprised and
grateful for all the support
they have been getting since
the fire. Ms. Sabaroff received
a handful of checks from peo-
ple living in the Detroit area
who heard about her son's
tragedy.
"It's heartwarming to see
people who are willing to give
to complete strangers," she
said.
In the meantime, Mr.
Sabaroff and Ms. Hoff are
staying with relatives. ❑
