Paris (JTA) — Some 50,000
Jews gathered in the Paris
suburb of Le Bourget for a
"Yom HaTorah" gathering
inspired by France's chief
rabbi, Joseph Sitruk.
For the third year in a row,
Yom HaTorah (Day of the
Torah) drew crowds mainly
from the northern suburbs of
Paris, especially Sarcelles,
the home of tens of
thousands of Jews, most of
whom are of North African
origin.
Apart from dozens of
stands selling religious
items — such as mezuzot,
ketubot (Jewish marriage
contracts) and even electric
hot plates for keeping meals
warm throughout Shabbat
— the vast, 270,000-square-foot
exhibition hall was devoted to
booths where visitors could

learn the meaning of various
Jewish rituals.
At the exhibition — a
highlight of which was a
speech delivered by Israel's
Sephardic chief rabbi,
Eliahu Bakshi-Doron —
visitors could learn the
meaning of kashrut, see the
blades and knives used for
the ritual slaughtering of
cattle and taste authentic
Jewish recipes.

Amid howling loudspeakers,
throngs of children wearing
kipot were wrestling their way
to attractions in the "Teaming"
area, where entertainers were
quizzing them about Jewish
law.

Another major space was
devoted to the topic of
"memory" and focused on
the history of the Holocaust.

Representatives of local
Jewish schools worked the
crowds, trying to catch the
attention of visitors and in-
duce them to provide finan-
cial support. ❑
