- That opposition reflected the "official" position of Israeli lead- ers, who insisted that such link- age could jeopardize the delicate peace process. But Mr. Schumer also heard from Israeli officials who hint- ed that a reminder or two about the boycott might be a good idea as the House debated the bill — as long as it didn't in- terfere with passage. "The Israelis were playing a weird game," said a congres- sional staffer who worked on the bill. "Many made it clear that they would not be unhap- py to get some boycott language in the bill. But they didn't want too much pressure or anything that would actually slow down the peace process. So they played a kind of brinkman- ship." Ultimately, the bill — which Mr. Schumer voted against — easily cleared the House. In a statement, the New Yorker said it was "extremely anom- alous to lift restrictions on U.S. economic aid when the PLO supports an economic boycott of both Israel and American companies that do business in Israel."
