RELIGIOUS DOVE page 57

Jewish bloodshed, not less.
As for the religious side of the
issue, Hatsofeh stated: "All of
us want peace and pray for it
every day anew. But as believ-
ers who are the children of be-
lievers, we do not differentiate
between the Jewish people, the
Land of Israel and the Torah,
which represent a oneness that
is the identity card of our peo-
ple."
Regarding the views of the
NRP and other Orthodox
hawks, Rabbi Amital said sim-
ply, "They have their way of see-
ing things, I have mine."
He sees the PLO agreement
as having driven the religious
right into 'the trap of pessimism
— they've demonized the ac-
cord, they see catastrophe com-
ing.
But he thinks he knows a
way out: "We must accept the
agreement as a fact, and try to
make the best of it."
The settlers and the NRP

Minister Yitzhak Rabin to his
promise that autonomy will not
lead to a Palestinian state, and
fight to keep the borders of a
"Palestinian entity" from en-
croaching on the Jewish settle-
ments, he said.
Rabbi Amital believes it is
doable. "I have tremendous
doubts that the final stage of the
agreement will ever be
reached," he said. "The dispute
over Jerusalem will prevent it
from ever going beyond auton-
omy. As they say, there's noth-
ing so permanent as a
temporary solution."
Rabbi Amital has rare confi-
dence. Most Israelis, whether
they support the accord or not,
seem to believe that the last stop
is a Palestinian state. For him,
though, this is just more pes-
simism, more doomsaying. "My
daughter is about to buy an
apartment here in Alon Shvut.
Is she afraid? Am I? What can I
do, I'm an optimist." ❑

Washington (JTA) — Jewish
organizations are divided
over a federal appeals court
ruling that allows religious
groups to maintain religious
displays on government
property without violating
the Constitution.
Chabad-Lubavitch of
Georgia may erect and
maintain a 15-foot tall me-
norah in front of the state
Capitol Building in Atlanta
during the eight nights of
Chanukah, the 11th U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals
ruled last week.
The case centered on the
rights of religious groups to
display religious symbols on
government property.

Chabad, along with some
other Jewish groups, have
long sought to accompany
Christian symbols placed in
the public's view with Jew-
ish symbols.
"We're delighted," said
Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky,
spokesman for the fervently
Orthodox Lubavitch move-
ment, which brought the
case against the Georgia
state government. "We hope
that opposition to these me-
norahs will stop."
The decision drew
criticism, however, from
members of the mainstream
Jewish community.
"We very much regret
(the) decision," said Marc
