Read-A-Thon

David Gordis

Dr. Gordis
Gives Talk

Dr. David Gordis, president of
the Hebrew College in Boston
and director of the Wilstein In-
stitute on Jewish Public Policy,
will address issues facing the
Jewish community today in a
presentation at 7:30 p.m. Nov.
3 at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The talk is titled "Identity, Con-
tinuity and Intermarriage —
the New Jewish Vocabulary."
Dr. Gordis, a past vice
president of the University of
Judaism in Los Angeles, is a
graduate of both Columbia
University and the Jewish
Theological Seminary, where
he was ordained in 1964. He
also holds bachelor of arts
and master of arts degrees in
history, as well as master of
Hebrew literature and doctor
of philosophy in Talmud de-
grees.
He is involved in a wide
range of leadership positions,
including the Jewish Televi-
sion Network, the Los Ange-
les Jewish Legal Project and
the Bioethics Commission of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews
The lecture, which is co-
sponsored
sponsored by the Adat
munity Adult Study Com-
mission and the Midrasha
Center for Adult Jewish
Learning, is open to the com-
at no charge.

The Beth Achim branch of the
Congregational Religious school
will hold a Mitzvah Read-A-
Thon Nov. 9-Dec. 9. This event
will correspond with Jewish
Book Month.
This event will provide stu-
dents with the opportunity to
read books by Jewish authors
on Jewish topics and perform
the mitzvah of tzedakah.
Students will secure
pledges per page that they
successfully read. At the con-
clusion of the Read-A-Thon
all participants will receive a
certificate of national recog-
nition. Prizes will be awarded
based on the total pages read.
Money raised from the
Mitzvah Read-A-Thon will go
to the Beth Achim branch of
the Congregational Religious
School.

Shabbat Dinner

The Young Family Shabbat
Committee of Temple Emanu-
El will host its annual Shabbat
dinner 6 p.m. Nov. 12 at the
temple. A song and dance ses-
sion will follow dinner. Reser-
vations are required.
Young Family Shabbat
events are designed for fam-
ilies with children ages 2-7.
The YFS committee holds
Shabbat morning worship
services for such families on
a regular basis.
