Mrs. Kelman, who also is li- censed to do facials and waxing, says her cosmetics business "isn't paying the mortgage" yet, but she believes it's just a mat- ter of getting the word out. "My list of customers grows every day," she says. "Some women say to me, 'What's the big deal? I've been using make- up on Shabbat all my life.' "But a lot of women are real- ly bothered; they want to use makeup and do the right thing. Now that there are cosmetics approved for Shabbat use, they don't have to be bothered by their consciences." Federation Hosts Tax Seminar would not conflict with Ha- lachah. Just about everything had to be taken into account, from color to the specific way in which the cosmetics can be used. A key in applying the make- up is first breaking it up, so one doesn't violate the Halachah against changing the consis- tency of an item on Shabbat. It also must be applied on a clean face, with a specific brush (which Mrs. Kelman has cus- tom-made), and colors cannot be combined. Today, Mrs. Kelman's ShainDee Estheque includes lip color, blush, dual-action powder that also works as a pressed foundation, eyeliner, under-eye concealer and eye shadow. Though colors are limited — with lipstick, it's a question of how intense the pigment can be — it doesn't mean there isn't a variety. Mrs. Kelman offers 25 eye shadows, 15 blushes (cost- ing $10 each), 15 lipsticks and three foundations. Locally, Leah Unger of Oak Park works as Mrs. Kelman's distributor.
