ilda Jacobs says she is
concerned about how
Gov. John Engler's edu-
cational reforms are go-
ing to affect Huntington Woods
children who attend Berkley
Schools.
Ms. Jacobs is running unop-
posed for a fourth term as a
Huntington Woods commis-
sioner. Ms. Jacobs is running
for one of two open commis-
sioner positions on a four-per-
son commission. The other
candidate, also unopposed, is
Gordon Hassig.
Ms. Jacobs worries that the
governor's reform package will
prohibit Huntington Woods and
Berkley residents — who cur-
rently spend about $5,500 per
student — from taxing them-
selves more if they want to
boost that amount.
"I don't think the reforms are
good for the Berkley school sys-
tem," she said. "Whatever hap-
pens down the road, we have to
make sure we have the choice
to increase the funding for our
students or not to increase it. I
think it should be up to our lo-
cal voters."
"We feel the Berkley school
system is a real anchor to our
city," said Ms. Jacobs, who is
the mother of a ninth-grade
student and a recent high
school graduate. "The school
system's survival and vitality
totally affect the future of our
city."
The candidate is the devel-
opment coordinator for JARC,
an organization for the Jewish
developmentally disabled.
In addition to promoting the
city's recycling program, the
Temple Emanu-El member is
encouraging her Jewish neigh-
bors to take advantage of the
newly-expanded Jimmy Pren-
tis Morris Jewish Community
Center.
The JCC, at most only one
mile away from Huntington
Woods residents, is "sort of an
extension of our neighborhood."
"We're excited about the re-
naissance of the Jewish Corn- •
munity (Center) campus," she
said. 0
