U.S. Presses Syria On Travel Rules Washington (JTA) — The Clinton administration is "consistently, persistently" pressing the Syrian govern- ment to allow more Jews to leave the country, a senior State Department official told Congress last week. "We will continue to raise the issue until we're satisfied that all Syrian Jews who wish to travel can do so," Edward Djerejian, assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern and South Asian affairs, said during an Oct. 21 appearance on Capitol Hill. Mr. Djerejian testified before the House Foreign Af- fair s subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East. He addressed the subject of Syrian Jewry in response to questions from Reps. Ben- jamin Gilman, R-N.Y., and Peter Deutsch, D-Fla. The number of Jews leav- ing Syria has fallen dra- matically since last October, raising doubts about whether President Hafez Assad is still committed to his April 1992 announce- ment that travel restrictions against Jews had been lifted. Since Mr. Assad's decision granting freedom of travel to Syrian Jews, "approximate- ly 80 percent of the 3,600 to 4,000 members of the Syrian Jewish community have received exit permits," Djerejian said. Between 1,100 and 1,200 Jews remain in Syria, he said, most of whom are presumably unable to leave. Amsterdam Police Detain Israelis Amsterdam (JTA) — Police in Amsterdam have detain- ed 19 Israelis living in Holland in connection with the laundering of millions of dollars of drug-related money. Announcement of the ar- rests was made here the same day that Tel Aviv police said that they had de- tained two other Israel- based members of the opera- tion who had been investing the illegal funds in real estate there. The Amsterdam police identified the gang leaders as brothers Menashe and Ami Eini and their cousin Zion Eini. Zion Eini's sister Ilana was also arrested. 6209 ORCHARD LAKE ROAD • WEST BLOOMFIELD (IN THE SUGAR TREE SHOPPING PLAZA) 313.855.8000 Grandparents & Seniors SAVE 20%* Ends Sat. 10/30/93 1( 00L11 - 10SPITAL 41; • 410 1 • -TOY SHOP SOLDIER The Eini family, originally from Rehovot, immigrated to the Netherlands more than 12 years ago. The Eini brothers were known to the police as the "Israel Connection" in a separate drug-selling opera- tion uncovered a month ago. According to the Amster- dam police, the investigation of the money-laundering operation involved close co- operation between the Amsterdam and Tel Aviv police forces for more than half a year, with Israeli and Dutch police working in each other's countries. ❑ * Show AARP Card or Sign Grandparents Pledge to Receive Discount.
