LANDAU SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS S ome 900 newborn children in Israel — 8 percent of those born every year — suffer from congenital heart disease. Half to three-quarters of these infants require surgery in order to live and grow. At the Children's Medical Center in Israel (CMCI), on, the campus of Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, doc- tros prefer to treat these heart problems with catheteriza- tion rather than surgery. By inserting a thin catheter into the blood vessels — in- stead of surgically repairing the abnormal arteries — almost no scar is left, there is very little physical or psychological trauma, and the amount of hospital stay and cost is greatly reduced. Today, some 400 pediatric catheterizations are perform- ed annually at the CMCI, Israel's largest center for such treatment. According to Dr. Benny Zeevi, director fo the Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Unit at CMCI, about 40 percent of the heart catheterizations of children at the center are therapeutic rather than diagnostic, as they were in the past. Among the operations that can be accomplished by this procedure are the dila- tion of all four heart valves, the closing of abnormal blood vessels, the dilation of the aorta (whose enlarged state causes hypertension). ebrew emorial Chapel Serving the entire Detroit Jewish community with dignity, tradition and compassion since 1916. *MIMI aNNNOM The Family of the Late Israeli Hospital Helps Newborns Mark E.
