Jerusalem - The Israeli econ-
omy has been expanding since
June, following the closure-in-
duced slowdown in the second
quarter of the year, according
to Tsipi Gal-Yam, the Trea-
sury's economic adviser.
Gal-Yam attributed the re-
newed growth to vigorous in-
dustrial activity.
During June and July, in-
dustrial production shot up 6.3
percent and work hours in-
creased 4.8 percent, following
a 3 percent drop in April and
May.
Average industrial produc-
tion was 4.3 percent higher
than its average level last year.
Exports continued expand-
ing, particularly industrial ex-
ports, during the third quarter.
Metal, machinery and elec-
tronics exports jumped 11 per-
cent compared to the previous
quarter. In addition, both
tourism and retail trade ex-
panded significantly.
The drop in unemployment
during the first half of the year
was characterized by a signif-
icant increase in the number of
workers - both native and im-
migrant - joining the work
force compared to last year.
During the first half of the
year, the number of employed
increased by 54,000 compared
to the second half of 1992. Of
those workers, 51,000 were em-
ployed in the business sector.
The immigrant unemploy-
ment rate continued dropping
gradually, falling to 19.4 per-
cent in the second quarter com-
pared to 22 percent in the
previous quarter and an aver-
age 29 percent for 1992.
