installed, the savvy decorator will carefully
think through the project before beginning.
Even the most elaborate wall system won't
be satisfactory if it doesn't provide the right
spaces in the right places for the items you
need to organize. That's why deciding where
to put a wall system, as well as what to put into
it, is so important.
Most people rely on experienced profes-
sionals for their design and installation. If
you're putting in a custom unit, you may want
to get design help from an architect or inte-
rior designer. For the construction of the unit,
rely on a cabinetmaker, woodworker or fur-
niture maker.
For ready-made units, turn to showroom
or retail sales professionals familiar with the
variety of products on the market.
PICTURES AND MIRRORS
Perhaps the greatest area for fun or fear in
wall decor, however, resides in adornment.
What to put on the walls — mirrors, a single
picture or a grouping? Botanical prints or geo-
metries? Fabric as art or metallic sculptures
and sconces? A thematic approach through
the house or a room-by-room hodgepodge of
collectibles?
Regardless of a person's tastes in decor,
personal history makes for an easy accesso-
ry tale. Hang framed diplomas and certificates
on the den wall, or create a family photo mo-
saic by framing antique photos or enlarge-
ments of favorites from your own lifetime.
Many prized possessions are mementoes
of travel that recapture the excitement and tell
the tale of those trips in your home. Framed
posters on your living room wall bring back
the romance of a Hawaiian honeymoon; ex-
otic masks evoke memories of Africa. Afghans
or Native American rugs hung on walls are
reminisces of weekend excursions; delicate
cross-stitch samples framed into warm wall
hangings showcase Grandma's or Mom's tal-
ents. [I]

CAVEAT EMPTOR

Do some research before making an of-
fer on a new home, advises Good House-
keeping. Check water run-off by visiting the
site on a wet day. An uneven yard surface
could suggest that expansive soil was used to
fill the lot.
Have the lot evaluated to find out if it is lo-
cated on a filled swamp, slide area, city dump
or lake.
