CHAPMAN HOUSE

SMART To OLS

A quick stroll through a hardware store
will make the novice home-improvement per-
son dizzy with possibilities. If you're putting
together a toolbox for around-the-house use,
here are the major tool groups:
• Hammers. The first of mankind's tools.
the common claw hammer has a metal head
and notched curved claw on the opposite end
for pulling nails out of wood.
The 16-ounce size is good for home use,
while professionals use the 20-ounce variety.
• Bars. The best-known variety is the crow
bar, although they come in a variety of sizes
to suit whatever you are disassembling. When
using, don't put all your weight on the bar, es-
pecially when standing on an uneven surface.
Once whatever you're tearing apart breaks
free, your energy will throw you off-balance
unless you are braced.
• Screwdrivers. The two major types are
the slotted screwdriver with a flat tip and wood
or plastic handle and the Phillips screwdriv-
er with a pointed, crisscross head. They come
in a number of sizes. Always use the screw-
driver that fits the screw snugly. If not, you
can damage the slot in the screw_
• Saws. The varieties range from cross-
cut or rip saws to hacksaws, backsaws and
coping saws. The number of teeth on the
blade defines the saws usage, as well as
whether the saw is to be used to cut metal or
wood.
• Pliers. Again, there are a variety of pliers
for a variety of uses. The basic kind is the slip-
joint plier, but other types are known as Chan-
nel locks, Vise-Grips and needle-nose pliers.
• Wrenches. There are two kinds of
wrenches — those for general use and "pipe
wrenches," which are specialized plumbing
tools. The basic model is the adjustable
wrench with a screw gear to open or close on
the object. the other type are open-end
wrenches that come in a variety sizes, as well
as the socket and Allen wrenches. 0

COLOR CODE

Use color to change a room's mood. For
cozy, traditional rooms, opt for rich, dark col-
ors. Use pastels and neutral shades to sooth.
Create a stimulating environment with cheer-
ful, bright hues. 0
