The best way to get an inexpensive, im-
pressive change is to consult a professional
interior designer.
It's a misconception that only the wealthy
can afford such experts. Most designers are
savvy when it comes to shortcuts, respect
clients' budgets, and are brilliant at re-ar-
ranging what you already own.
You might hire a designer for just a few
hours or take advantage of complimentary de-
sign service at the store where you bought
your paint, fabric, wallpaper and/or furnish-
ings.
If you prefer to do-it-yourself, creative use
of paint and fabric is the easiest, most inex-
pensive way to transform interiors.
If you're thinking, "But I can't sew!" relax.
You needn't be a seamstress to use fabric ef-
fectively. Consider these no-sew solutions,
from Instant Interiors: Decorate With Fabric,
Fast by Gail Brown (Chilton):
• Use ravel-free fabric such as vinyls, lam-
inates and synthetic suedes. Cut them out and
you're done.
• Puddle hems to hide raw edges. Allow at
least 20 inches for lavish puddling; stuff with
excess fabric for a fuller look. optional: Use
a wide rubber band to gather the fabric before
puddling.
• Glue hems and trims. Glue guns are ter-
rific for adhering accents, but the adhesive
may not last through washing or dry clean-
ing.
• Fuse trims. New narrow fusible transfer-
web strips make this fast and easy. Fuse to the
trim first, then to the project.
Heed these hints on using paint for quick
effects, from Shortcuts to Great Decorating by
Mary Gilliatt (Little, Brown):
• If you like the appearance of benign ne-
glect, play up shabby painted or papered walls
with a couple of coats of matte polyurethane.
This will yellow and age them nicely.
• For a tailored look paint a border or even
a double border under the cornice, if there
is one, or just below ceiling height if there is
not
• Paint a border around the edge of doors,
window frames and above the skirting boards
(baseboards).
• Add character to a room by painting the
woodwork in a contrasting color. Dark colors,
such as navy blue and bottle green, can look
surprisingly good, particularly when set off by
white wall. ❑
