The entrance door, a solid oak four-pan- el door with glass sidelights, invites you into an early 20th-century Mission- style home. The foyer floor, a dark oak plank with walnut inlay, sets the tone and the hue of the house. The stairs, to the right of the entrance door, were built on site and have a definitive Arts and Crafts feel, with strong newel posts in- terspersed with a thick-thin-thick pattern of spindles. Antique Curtis prints flank the porthole on the stairway, and two Art Nou- veau floral tooled-leather and wood chairs add flavor. An antique Kilim rug in terra cotta adds color to the foyer, as does a Robert Motherwell paint- ing in black and gray with a touch of red. `There are lots of interesting spaces, volumes and windows," says Lubin. "There is a lot of light throughout the house, even with the dark wood." Early on in the creation of the home, the Epsteins recruited Richard Daniels, a senior designer with Brian Killian & Co. in Birmingham, into the design process.
