sideboard are Scottish
oak from the turn of the
century. Fishing items
are scattered throughout
the house.
The second bedroom is more contemporary. Two twin beds with
burgundy and teal comforters and shiny black spindle headboards con-
trast with the antique washstand and oak-framed beveled glass mirror
in the corner.
The third bedroom is upstairs. A dramatic loft with full bath and huge
walk-in closet, the master suite contains a careful mix of contemporary
and antique furnishings.
The late 1800s antique oak dresser with copper fittings is from Scot-
land. Across the room, a contemporary black leather recliner with a
matching ottoman shares a corner with a sleek halogen floor lamp.
The chair overlooks the great room and offers another spectacular
view of the lake. Beneath another window, a window seat doubles as
storage for novels and games. The custom-made forest green and ma-
roon window-seat covers match the duvet cover and pillow shams on
the bed.
A balcony off the northern doorwall provides an ideal spot to sit and
drink coffee or watch the birds. It also offers a view of the perennial
garden, one of several flower and vegetable gardens the owners main-
tain around the house.
"My perennial garden is just beginning to take shape," says the wife
She proudly shows off peonies and poppies, lilies and columbine.
Around the corner, her husband's vegetable garden flourishes with
pumpkins and squash and a variety of other summer and fall produce.
"We moved in the exact opposite direction of where the action was,"
says the husband, summing up what he loves about his year-round va-
cation home.
'e went where our action was antiquing and gardening and
fishing. It's an emotional thing. Being here is something special."
