THE DAN HOTELS But it's been. rare in my ex- perience for a concierge to be misinformed. Moreover, most of the concierges I've met are not haughty. Quite the con- trary: They seem to genuine- ly enjoy the interaction with guests. "Hello — welcome back!" Tony Caduff greeted me warmly and heartily when I checked into the Zurich Hilton hotel recently for my second visit. Although he's met hundreds of guests since then, Mr. Caduff, nonethe- less, remembered me from the first visit and he even handed me a copy of the In- ternational Herald Tribune, recalling from a year ago how eager I was to read an Eng- lish language newspaper. As for the cosmopolitan concierge himself, he can read — and speak — English, Ger- man, French, Italian, Span- ish and his own native Romansche, a Latin-based language that's spoken by a small minority of Swiss. "And I'd like to learn Hebrew, too," says Mr. Caduff, who greets many guests from Israel. A native of St. Moritz, the Swiss town that's now a fa- mous ski resort, Mr. Caduff has been a concierge at the Zurich hotel for 22 years, ever since it opened, and before that, he worked in hotels in Rome, Venice, Paris and Lon- don. Like other highly trained concierges, he proudly wears on his uniform a pair of gold crossed keys that indicate he's a member of the organi- zation of concierges, the Union de International Portieres de Grandes Hotels. Even after two decades as a concierge, Mr. Caduff still approaches his work with en- thusiasm — in fact, with downright exuberance. Whether it's finding some- one's false teeth or helping a guest select an appropriate restaurant, he says that meeting and helping guests is the real pleasure of his work. "What I enjoy is that every day I meet different people — so many different people from so many places," he says, standing in his usual post at the reception desk behind the sign that reads CON- CIERGE. "And I love to help all of them!" Recalling the Nazi era and the hatreds directed against Jews and others, he said, "I am among those who think that all this can return, but I hope to die before becoming totally pessimistic." He called for a return to the human values of truth, love, altruism and unity in order to overcome current negative tendencies, such as the move toward dividing people by their ethnic identi- ty. Though he did not mention them by name, his words were also clearly directed at Italy's Northern League Party and its supporters, which have won great sup- port in prosperous northern Italy with calls to separate the region from the rest of the country. Scalfaro spoke during an unscheduled address that concluded a solemn ceremony in the ornate theater of Carpi, a northern Italian town near Bologna. It was the final event in a series of commemorations marking the beginning of the Nazi deportation to death camps of about a quarter of Italy's pre-war Jewish community.
