The scholar in resi- dence, Rabbi Moshe Tutnauer, is an orator and leader of the Conservative Movement in Is- rael. Rabbi Tut- nauer is a gradu- ate of New York University and the Jewish The- ological Sem- inary. After serving as Rabbi of Beth El con- gregation in Phoenix, Ariz., for 10 years, the family made ali- yak in 1972. Rabbi Tutnauer, who has taught in the field of Bible and rab- binics at acade- mic institutions in North and South America and Israel, has Moshe Tutnauer been active as a guest rabbi. On Nov. 6, Rabbi Tutnauer will deliver the sermon "Jews of Silence — Silent No Longer." This first-hand report on Jew- ish life and the re-establishment of the Conservative Movement in Moscow reflects his experi- ences as guest rabbi of Hineni Congregation in 1991 and pro- fessor of humanities at the Russian State University in 1992. There will be a luncheon fol- lowing services. Rabbi Tutnauer will speak on "The Spiritual Awakening of the Traditional Jew," a discus- sion on new ways of en- countering meaning in the prayer book. On Nov. 7, the men's club will sponsor a breakfast at 10 a.m. The topic, "Jerusalem, Religion and Politics in the Holy City," is a perspective on the ideological and political conficts in Is- raeli society and their im- pact on the peace process. Jewish Holidays Program Is Set Parents and grandparents who want tips on how to create Jew- ish celebrations will receive them in a new program co- sponsored by Temple Beth El and JEFF (Jewish Experiences for Families). The program, "Creating Jewish Memories: The `Fun'damentals of Jewish Celebrations," will meet at Temple Beth El for six sessions throughout the year, each geared to a specific celebration. All sessions will be led by JEFF facilitators and are open to the community. The sessions, scheduled for Sunday morn- ings, will begin with bagels and coffee at 9:30 a.m. and contin- ue through 11 a.m. There is a charge for non-members. The first program, Oct. 24, will center on the celebration of Shabbat. Future sessions are: Nov. 14, Chanukah; Jan. 9, Tu B'Slivat; Feb. 6, Purim; March 6, Passover; and April 24, Shavuout. Interfaith Discussion Set Temple Israel will host an in- formal discussion group for in- terfaith couples who are either married or contemplating mar- riage. The group will meet 9:45- 11 a.m. Oct. 31 at the temple. The focus of the discussion will be child-rearing issues, making Jewish choices in an in- terfaith family.
