There are, then, within the
earliest verses of this week's
parsha, lessons from Abraham
and Sarah's faithful response to
God's call: Lech Lecha! Some
will say that the Divine Pres-
ence singled them out for lead-
ership of the Jewish people
based on their courage. Others
will insist that Abraham and
his family responded to an in-
ner call, an internal voice of en-
couragement and purpose.
But the rabbis all agree that
God doesn't reveal the details
of his mission so that the par-
ticipants will find reward and
meaning on each step of the
journey.
Or, in the poetry of Alvin
Fine:
". . victory lies

Not at some high place along the
way,
But in having made the journey,
stage by stage,
A sacred pilgrimage."
This week's Torah portion is
not named "Abraham" because
the call of Lech Lecha is a call
to each of us. The mission of
Jewish faith was not issued
only to Abraham and Sarah,
but for each of us to go forth,
alone sometimes, to our own fu-
tures, to our own sense of re-
sponsibility, and to our own
blessings.
Shabbat Shalom. ❑
