on Wolfson keeps talking
about getting parents out
of the car. Perhaps they're
beginning to listen.
The director of the Whizin In-
stitute for Family Life and vice-
president of the University of
Judaism, Mr. Wolfson has de-
voted his professional life to re-
search, dissemination and
training around Jewish life. The
Whizin model focuses on family
education for all generations.
"We've never had a terrific
model of education for parents.
We've always focused on the
young and the old. But if we
don't have the support and stay-
ing power of the family, this ed-
ucation doesn't work," Mr.
Wolfson said. "To get to the chil-
dren, we have to reach the par-
ents and grandparents and
extended families. How do we
get the parents out of the car
when they drop their children
off at religious school?
"We need to provide programs
which engage them as a family
and strengthen their commit-
ment. This needs to be more
than a show for kids."
Mr. Wolfson and his col-
leagues have taken this think-
ing on the road.
In addition to running a sum-
mer seminar at the University
of Judaism in Los Angeles, they
also travel around the country,
teaching others how to help
make Judaism relevant to fam-
ilies.
They stop in Detroit Oct. 27
and 28.
The general public can learn
more about Mr. Wolfson's ap-
proach from 9:30 a.m. to 2:15
p.m. Oct. 27 at the annual In-
stitute of the Jewish Federa-
tion's Women's Division.
A more practical, intensive
format will be available for con-
gregation teams 5:45-9:30 p.m.
Oct. 27 and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct.
28.
Area temples and synagogues
have been invited to bring up to
eight individuals to the 10.5-
hour training session to form a
team. Each team must consist
of at least a rabbi, educational
director, lay leader and teacher.
"We're looking to enhance the
concept of the team in congre-
gations and agencies," said Sue
Stettner, director of Jewish Ex-
periences For Families, the or-
ganization sponsoring the
teaching conference with the
Agency for Jewish Education.
"JEFF has been working with
teams for six years. It's hard
work for every institution to
gather a team. But we need peo-
ple to listen to each other, their
concerns and meet together. We
need to support congregations,
agencies and day schools and
help teach teachers ways to en-
hance their family program-
ming," she added.
JEFF currently runs com-
munity programming in addi-
tion to working individually with
synagogues and temples. Ms.
Stettner said she hopes the
Whizin seminar will strengthen
those ties.
Along with Mr. Wolfson,
Whizin will bring other staff con-
sultants to discuss issues and
practical solutions such as re-
treats, working with family ser-
vice and community centers and
synagogue programming.
Teams will determine their
individual goals, attend work-
shops and regroup to brainstorm
the best ways to use gained in-

formation at their synagogues
and agencies.
"I think this program speaks
to the community coming to-
gether —building and strength-
ening. And we will follow up
with additional training
throughout the year," Ms. Stet-
tner said.
Mr. Wolfson added, "It used
to be assumed that Jewish peo-
ple lived Jewish lives. Not any-
more. We need to invite our
people back into the synagogue.
This isn't just outreach. It's in-
reach, too." ❑
