Jerusalem (JTA) — The re-
cent breakthrough in the
peace process and Israel's
increasing economic growth
make this one of the most
important periods ever in
the process of Israel's nation-
building, President Ezer
Weizman said this week.
Mr. Weizman made the ob-
servation during an address
in his home before 200 dele-
gates of Hadassah Interna-
tional, the women's Zionist
organization, in Jerusalem
for its eighth annual con-
gress.
During the informal ad-
dress, punctuated with
anecdotes, jokes and
repartee with the audience,
Weizman conceded that he is
forced to mute his personal
politics in the non-partisan
office of the presidency.
But he said he is "hopeful
and optimistic" about the
recent accord with the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization, which, he observed,
people said could never
happen."
"Never say 'never' in poli-
tics," he said.
He declined to offer
specifics on his view of the
impact of the Israeli-PLO
mutual recognition accord
on an agreement with Syria,
saying only that it will in-
evitably "give a push" to
peace efforts on other tracks.
He also said peace with
Israel's Arab neighbors
would help diminish the
threat from Iran by weaken-
ing Islamic fundamentalist
influences in the region.
Mr. Weizman noted there
are elements within Israel
who are unhappy with the
agreement, mentioning his
recent meetings with Jewish
settlers in the territories.

But he emphasized that the
accord had been supported
within a democratic
framework by a majority of
the Knesset.
He said Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin had been
"confident enough" about
matters at home following
the controversial Knesset
vote to visit China, which he
called "a good thing."
The whole point of making
peace with its Arab
neighbors, he said, is to free
Israel to go beyond narrow
defense and security matters
and be comfortable enough
to concentrate on interna-
tional relations and econ-
omic development.
Meanwhile, Mr. Weizman
reiterated his frequent

theme that Israel's future
lies in the aliyah of "all or
most Jews."
"I believe that Zionism is
living in Zion," Mr. Weiz-
man said.
He said the challenge is to
prepare to absorb countless
immigrants, particularly
from the former Soviet
Union, who are con-
templating coming to Israel
but fear the economic uncer-
tainty.
Mr. Weizman also observ-
ed that recent progress in
diplomacy with the Vatican
was important, although not
crucial, in furthering the
peace process. It was more
important, he said, for the
Catholics, to enable them to
accept Judaism after 2,000
years.
