Danny Raskin, Jewish News • • • • Weddings Bar/Bat Mitzvahs Anniversaries Private Parties Food Selections Galore At A 10-Year Anniversary DANNY RASKIN LOCAL COLUMNIST T he corning of a 10-year an- niversary was cause for much celebration by Nick Sorise and John Reaser. Back in 1973, many who said that Nicky's in the Top of Troy Building on West Big Beaver would probably end up like the rest who tried to make it there (Bonaventure, Kogy's. Syd- ney's), are not only customers today . . . but eating their words too. And who would have thought that an anniversary could happen at Nicky's with Nick and John wearing regular suits? . . . No more tuxedos for them ... No more standing out like penguins while customers reveled in informal garb. BetWeen 600 and 700 guys 'n gals had a fun-filled time as streamers from colorful balloons hung all over the place a la New Year's Eve. Arthur Klein shocked every- one by wearing a tie . . . Tony Tocco had an extra drink on his 34 years owning Pointe Bar-B- Q in Warren . . . Marty Wilk, whose Excalibur celebrated its 15th anniversary recently, was all handshakes and smiles. Antonio Foglia, Antonio's of Italy bossman, telling everyone that he has "the greatest wife in the world. There's not a jeal- ous bone in Linda's body" .. . John Psaila, former National Football League back, looking trim enough to enter battle again . . . Adeline and Al Stern telling Audrey Pearl and hubby Cy Feldman where the right places to eat are in Las Vegas . . . and financial adviser Audrey paying them back with a couple of money-making tips . . . Nicky's personable General Manager Shawn Stinson walk- ing around making certain everyone was having a good time. The food flowed like wine as Chef Ron Cureton and Nicky's night chef, Russell Hoick, made sure the buffet menu was a good one . . . Russell is a Culi- nary Institute of America grad whose experience takes in Ep- cot Center's Alfredo of Rome, New York's Tavern On The Green, the Palace at Auburn Hills which he opened for Machus in 1988, former part owner of the one-time Van Dyke Manor, and most recently, night chef at the Whitney. The food included oysters Rockefeller, stuffed mushroom caps, Italian sausage in puff pastry with whole-grain mus- tard, chicken fingers with plum sauce, shrimp and crab Alfredo, carved top round of beef with mini rolls, cold poached salmon, smoked salmon, smoked white- fish, smoked chubs, deviled eggs, stuffed celery with herb cream cheese, chicken liver canapes, smoked salmon ca- napes, stuffed cherry tomatoes, fruit, cheese and vegetable dis- play, assorted pastries and mousses. There was a lot of lively dancing to the fine rhythms of Heartbeat's five-piece band. Shawn knows that Nick and John have a big problem on their hands . . . how to top this when number 11 for Nicky's rolls around . . . They should have such problems all the time! LOOKS LIKE Joe Muer will have people singing the name of his new restaurant, slated to open the first week in Decem- ber, replacing the former Bijou on Southfield Road ... He'll call it "Joe's Grill of My Dreams" (honest!) ... Big wonder is if Joe will have a barbershop quartet at the opening singing "Girl of My Dreams"? or in this case, "Grill of My Dreams"? ... Al- most for certain, though, peo- ple will still call it just plain "Joe's Grill. CONGRATS . . . to Art and Simone Shafer ... on their 43rd anniversary . . . to Simone on her birthday . . . to Gayle Bal- di on birthday number 25. PROBABLY NOT too many customers know that there is a woman in the kitchen at Sultan's Mideastern restau- rant on Orchard Lake Road be- hind Dunham's in the Robin's Nest Shopping Center who has John Reaser and Nick Sorise of Nicky's. done all the cooking and order- ing since the place opened in 1985. She is low-keyed Dalai Sha- tila, in charge of the kitchen and the person responsible for those fine Lebanese dishes prepared at Sultan's, now operated by Nora Robin, wife of Mike Robin, also owner of the Robin's Nest. Former general manager Wally Joseph Soro is no longer with the restaurant . . . and is now manufacturing Mideast- ern food for supermarkets. THREE YEARS ago, Robin Orechkin played the slots of Ex- calibur Hotel in Las Vegas and hit the $10,000 jackpot. Lightning struck twice and bells rang like crazy again on the recent Vegas trip of Robin and hubby Mark. This time it was at the Mi- rage Hotel with Mark only 100 feet away playing blackjack when he heard Robin scream- ing . . . She had hit the $10,000 a second time! Mark comes home a loser while Robin is a winner ... both times taking his winnings to pull the lucky lever. GREEK NIGHT by Tassos Epicurean Cuisine on West Bloomfield's Boardwalk is Oct. 29, with two seatings, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. . . . Complete din- ner, tax included, is $28.50 per person . . . Because of the very limited seating, reservations are greatly recommended. THANKS TO local private eye Norman Lebowitz, two sis- ters recently met each other for the first time. Debbie Routin, 42, and Fern Coyle, 51, were united in an emotional encounter at Metro- politan Airport.
