You Don't Know."
Dorice Knutson, the mother
of a Southfield High ninth-grad-
er and Stevenson Elementary
first-grader, recommended
knocking on doors and telling
people about the advantages of
the area's public schools.
Ms. Knutson, who took her
children out of private schools,
says the school system deserves
a better reputation, but parents
must get involved — not only in
spreading positive news about
public education, but also in the
educational process itself.
"I don't rely on the school to
solely educate my children," she
said. "I think parents should
know that they are their child's
educators, too."
Facilitator Karen Schrock
summed up the group's activi-
ties: "We're going from a prob-
lem identification phase to a
work phase. It's going to take a
commitment from all of us." ❑

Holocaust never happened,
especially when the record
would show that Cleveland's
Jews were noticeably silent
and absent from protest on
the day that he returned to
their city.
Our rabbis in the Talmud
(Yevamot Kb) remind us that
"silence is acquiescence." The
decision to go to Seven Hills
did not come without great
inner struggle and con-
flict.Some of my congregants
know that initially I was op-
posed to such an approach. I
said so from the pulpit in a
sermon one Shabbat morn-
ing. But over time, I came to
realize that, to paraphrase
the Mishnah, Eilu Devarim
She'ein Lahem Shiur, this is
a matter for which there is no
limit. No quota can be placed

on our right and privilege,
and even our need, to protest
a distortion of historical fact
and a miscarriage of justice.
And the place to make this
point was in front of John
Demjanjuk's home, which
had become the symbol of his
newly won freedom, espe-
cially when the eye of this na-
tion was focused on that site.
Through all of this, I came
to a new point in my own un-
derstanding of myself and my
role as a rabbi, that there is
a time when a rabbi has to
act independently for some-
thing that he strongly be-
lieves in, even to separate
himself from the main of his
community and the more
commonly accepted opinion
or approach.
Elie Wiesel, upon accept-
ing the 1986 Nobel Peace
Prize, made the following
statement:
"I swore never to be silent
whenever and wherever hu-
man beings endure suffering
and humiliation. We must al-
ways take sides. Neutrality
helps the oppressor, never the
victim. Silence encourages
the tormentor, never the tor-
mented.
"Sometimes we must in-
terfere. When human lives
are endangered, when human
dignity is in jeopardy, na-
tional borders and sensitivi-
ties become irrelevant.
Wherever men or women are
persecuted because of their
race, religion or political
views, that place must — at
that moment — become the
center of the universe." Sev-
en Hills became the center of
this Jew's universe and a
place where I felt I had to be
seen and heard; and a place
where within the limits of the
law, I had to shrei gevalt.
