New Fiber Work
At Sybaris

Gerhardt Knodel, the head of
the Fiber Department at Cran-
brook Academy of Art, will have
his work be the subject of a one-
person exhibition at the Sybaris
Gallery through Nov. 13.
Gerhardt Knodel's work has
ranged from installations, the-
ater and architectural commis-
sions to explorations into the
pictorial potential of weaving.
Mr. Knodel was a major partic-
ipant in the expansive fiber art
movement of the 1970s, which
exploited the medium's sculp-
tural applications as a pliable
and versatile, yet humanizing,
manipulator of space.
His two-dimensional wall-
hung textiles continue his ex-
ploration of light, but they also
reflect on his vast experience
with three-dimensional archi-
tectural commissions. In one re-
cent series, depicting birds in
flight against a background of
rocks, the wefts are constructed
of cotton twill tape printed prior
to weaving, the warp is mylar.
The works appear translu-
cent, and in some cases they
actually are, though their light-
bending quality is more often
an illusion created by the mylar
strips interwoven as part of the
warp. The images, the rocks,
the birds, flow into one anoth-
er, symbolically moving the
viewer's eyes and mind about
and beyond the space.
Sybaris Gallery is at 202 E.
Third St., Royal Oak; 544X3388.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-Sat-
urday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
