Conservative Women
Will Honor Fourteen

Aliza Shevrin: Guest speaker.

Michigan Branch of Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism will hold its Torah
Fund Women of Achievement
Luncheon noon Nov. 1 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
There will be a special pre-
sentation of 1993 Achievement
Awards to 14 women from
Conservative sisterhoods in
Michigan.
Funds raised by WLCJ for
Torah Fund, help support the
Jewish Theological Seminary
in educating future rabbis, can-
tors, teachers and community
leaders.

Guest speaker will be Aliza
Shevrin on "Di Yiddishe Mama
— In Literature and in Real
Life." She is a translator of
Yiddish literature, a lecturer
and a teacher at Ann Arbor
Hillel. She also has given a se-
ries of lectures at the Detroit
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies.
Torah Fund vice president
Florence Gerber will present
the awards to the following hon-

Lewin To Speak
On Privacy Right

The next installment of the
Irwin I. Cohn Memorial in
Tamudic Law and Ethics will
be an 11 a.m. brunch Oct. 31
in the home of Paul and Leslie
Magy in Birmingham. The lec-
ture will feature lawyer and
lecturer Nathan Lewin, senior
partner of the Washington-
based law firm of Miller,
Cassidy, Larocca and Lewin.
Mr. Lewin's subject will be
"The Right to Privacy - The
First Amendment Guarantee/
The Halachic Perspective" and

will focus on the obligation of
the professional and the rights
of the patient/client.
The program is open to the
public; reservations are re-
quired. There is no charge.
This program is accredited for
two credits of Continuing
Medial Education, by the
Michigan State Medical
Society and the American
Osteopathic Association.

Na'amat Hears
President Lewis

Sylvia Lewis

Na'amat USA, Greater Detroit
Council will hear its national
president, Sylvia Lewis, at its
annual donor luncheon noon
Oct. 28 at Congregation Beth
Achim.
Ms. Lewis, of Akron, Ohio,
has been active in Na'amat
USA since 1948. In 1993, she
was elected national president.
She has served as its national
program and education vice
president, aliyah chairman,
Israel products chairman and
Midwest area fund-raising
chairman. In 1989, she was ap-
pointed national convention
program chairman for the or-
ganization's 31st biennial con-
vention .
A past president of the
Akron chapter, Ms. Lewis was
selected by Na'amat USA in
1966 to be a participant in a
four-week leadership training
seminar in Israel.
The invocation will be given
by Ethel Wasser and anthems
will be lead by Elaine Kohner,
accompanied by Florence
Citarel. There is a charge for
the luncheon.

Institute
Holds Oneg

The Sholem Aleichem Institute
will hold its first oneg of the
season 8:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the
Franklin Pointe clubhouse.
Dr. Frederic Pearson, direc-
tor of the Wayne State
University Center for Peace
and Conflict Studies, will speak
on "Diplomatic Options for
World Peace."

Israel Bonds And SZ
Honor Seymour Brode

Congregation Shaarey Zedek
will pay tribute to Seymour
Brode at its annual State of
Israel Bonds dinner 6 p.m. Oct.
28, at the synagogue. Mr. Brode
will receive the Israel Peace
Medal "for his long-time sup-
port of Israel's economic devel-
opment and his outstanding
service and devotion to his syn-
agogue and the community."
Monty Hall will be the spe-
cial guest at the dinner and will
play a role in the evening's fes-
tivities.
Mr. Brode is the owner-op-
erator of Franklin Fitness and
Racquet Club in Southfield,
Centaur in West Bloomfield
and chairman of the board of
directors of Israel Tennis
Centers, Inc. He is also a past
president and board member of
the National Tennis
Association, past president and
board member of the Michigan
Swimming Pool Association
and past vice president and
board member of the National
Spa and Pool Association.
Active in both Jewish and
civic affairs, Mr. Brode is a
founder, past president and
current board member of the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame. He is also affiliated with
the Holocaust centers in
Washington, D.C., and West

boards of the Michigan Maccabi
Club, Ohr Somayach —
Tanenbaum College
International, and is a past
board member of American
Friends of Hebrew University,
