n 1963, Betty Friedan chal-
lenged the way the world
viewed women in her book

The Feminine Mystique.

Thirty years later, she has
attempted to unravel the mys-
teries of aging through The
Fountain of Age — a manu-
script Ms. Friedan never envi-
sioned writing.
"I wasn't a bit interested in
writing a book about age. The
thought was so dreary," Ms.
Friedan told a standing-room-
only audience at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center on Oct. 5.
"I was in the same state of
denial as the rest of America."
The Fountain of Age took
Ms. Friedan 10 years to com-
plete, "to permeate through the
mystique of Alzheimer's disease

She asked them about
menopause.
"They said they didn't have
it. What? Were they biological
freaks?" Ms. Friedan asked.
In fact, the women had gone
through menopause. They
hadn't suffered any of the clas-
sic symptoms and did not give
the change-of-life much
thought.
Ms. Friedan put such
thoughts aside as she worked
intensely to advance the
women's movement through
her National Organization for
Women (NOW).
"And you know, like those
women, I didn't have my
menopause either. Unless of
course you count the time in

Unknowingly, Ms. Friedan
stumbled across the beginnings
of her book shortly after The
Feminine Mystique was pub-
lished.
As she toured the country,
Ms. Friedan asked to meet with
women who were combining
marriage, motherhood and pro-
fession. They were few in num-
ber at the time, yet struck Ms.
Friedan as the most vital

warehouse, trying to organize
the ladies of the League of
Women Voters, the women of
NOW and the radicals. Sweat
was pouring down me. Maybe
I was having a hot flash," Ms.
Friedan said.
None of these experiences
clicked as worthy of study un-
til Ms. Friedan met with a
gerontologist to talk about the
process of aging. She told the
